How to Find Which TV Show (and Episode) a Clip Is From
Movie clips get most of the attention, but a huge share of what people try to identify on TikTok and Instagram is actually TV. On SourceFinder, the most searched titles right now are almost all series: Invincible, The Rookie, Friends, Suits and The Sopranos.
TV is trickier than film because knowing the show is only half the answer. If it has ten seasons, you also want the episode.
Step 1: Find the show
The quickest route is to paste the clip link into SourceFinder:
- Copy the link from TikTok, Instagram Reels or X.
- Open SourceFinder and tap Paste Link.
- SourceFinder tells you the show, and when it can match the scene, the season and episode.
No link? Upload the saved video or a screenshot of the scene instead.
Step 2: Narrow down the episode
If you have the show but not the episode, a few things help:
- Look at the characters. Haircuts, cast members who joined or left, and kids who've grown up are great clues for which season you're in.
- Read the comments again. Now that you know the show, comments like "the one where Ross..." suddenly make sense.
- Search the show plus a description. "Suits episode Harvey fires Louis" is a much better search than "lawyer show scene".
- Ask the community. Post the clip to the SourceFinder community. Fans of a show can usually place a scene down to the episode.
Step 3: Find where to stream it
SourceFinder shows every service carrying the show in your region, split into streaming and buy or rent. Shows move between services often (Suits, for example, is on both Netflix and Peacock in the US right now), so it's worth checking at the moment you want to watch.
Why TV clips go viral without a name
Sitcoms and dramas produce endless short, self-contained moments: a one-liner, a fight, a reaction shot. Those get clipped, reposted and turned into memes, and after a few reposts nobody remembers to say where they're from. That's exactly the gap SourceFinder is built for.
