How to Find a Movie From a Screenshot
Sometimes there's no link to paste. A friend sent a screenshot in a group chat, you grabbed a frame before the video disappeared, or it's a meme with a movie still and a caption on top. You can still find the movie.
The quick way: upload it to SourceFinder
- Open SourceFinder and tap Upload Media.
- Pick the screenshot from your camera roll.
- SourceFinder analyzes the image and tells you the movie or TV show, plus where to stream it.
It works on screenshots of TikToks, Instagram posts, X posts, memes and plain movie stills.
How to take a screenshot that gets a match
Not every frame is equally useful. If you're grabbing the screenshot yourself:
- Pause on a face. A clear shot of a main character is the strongest clue.
- Avoid transitions. Frames mid-cut or mid-fade are blurry and confusing.
- Get the setting. A recognizable location, costume or prop helps a lot.
- Skip heavy text if you can. Captions on top are usually fine, but a frame with less covered is better.
- Try more than one. If the first frame doesn't work, try a different moment from the same clip.
Screenshots of memes and quotes
Meme formats often put a movie still under a quote. Upload the whole thing. SourceFinder reads the full image, and the quote itself can be a useful clue.
When a screenshot isn't enough
If the scene is very dark, very generic (two people in a car, a hallway) or from something obscure, a single image may not be enough. Two options:
- Find the original clip. If you can track down the video, paste the link or upload the video instead.
- Ask the community. Post the screenshot to the SourceFinder community and let other movie fans weigh in.
